Delight your holiday guests with simple handmade party favors.
Allrecipes and Better Homes & Gardens are teaming up to help you have a very merry Christmas.
Gift for a Gardener
For friends with a green thumb–and even for those without–a potted bulb is an outstanding party favor. To make this easy gift, tie a bow around a terra-cotta pot and nestle in a sprig of ivy, a Christmas ornament, and an Amaryllis bulb for a festive presentation.
Gift for a Baker
Cookie mix in a jar is a delicious gift your guests can enjoy long after the party’s over. Decorate a wide-mouth canning jar or other suitable container with jolly holiday shapes such as stars, snowflakes, or Christmas trees. Following the recipe of your choice, fill the jar with recipe ingredients, and print the recipe on cardstock.
Smells Like Christmas!
To make quick and easy scented sachets, start with plain drawstring muslin bags from a craft store. Decorate them with holiday-theme rubber stamp design–or use fabric markers to draw your own–and fill with a delightful aroma, such as cedar shavings, evergreen needles, or cinnamon sticks.
Tips for Homemade Party Favors
Choose a theme. If your friends like to cook, give them a gift they can use in the kitchen. Convert a plain white paperboard wine container (available online or at some shipping stores) into a gift box that holds a set of wooden utensils or other kitchen goodies. Cover the container with pretty scrapbook paper and secure with double-sided tape. Tie shut with a pretty ribbon.
Multiply. Choose favors that are easy to make in bulk, such as this tea kit. Fill heat-seal tea bags with a purchased loose tea blend. Seal the bag with a length of colorful embroidery thread in the center. Glue an embellished tag on the other end of the string, and package in a pretty box with honey sticks and a lovely tea cup or mug.
Customize. Even if you’re giving store-bought favors, you can package them with your own distinctive flair. Here, a plain plastic cosmetics bag gets dressed up for Christmas by adding on buttons, beads, and other festive baubles. Fill the bag with indulgences like scented soaps or practical items like a travel-size sewing kit.
