These exciting condiments take lunch to a higher level. With these tantalizing toppings, we’ve gone way beyond mustard and mayo. Load ’em onto burgers, hotdogs, veggie sandwiches, and hoagies. They’ll turn whatever you’re pressing between two slices of bread or rolling up in a wrap into an instant classic.
If you ever wondered, “What should I do with underripe avocados?” Here’s the answer. “Underripe avocados are lightly pickled in a tangy and slightly sweet brine,” explains Buckwheat Queen. “These are great to serve with your favorite burger, hot dog, or Tex-Mex dish. They make a snazzy addition to salads, too! So addictive, I buy more underripe avocados than I do ripe ones now.”
Fresh diced tomatoes get the chutney treatment with the addition of grated ginger, cumin, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, cloves, and lime juice. “This tomato chutney recipe is easy to make and tastes great just on crackers,” says gartenfee. Spoon it over a grilled burger, hot dog, or chicken sandwich.
Here’s a hot and tangy sandwich topping with pickled bell peppers, jalapenos, carrots, cauliflower, and onions, plus pimento-stuffed green olives, red pepper flakes, and chopped garlic. “Wonderful on Chicago-style Italian beef sandwiches, sausage sandwiches, French dips, pastas, or even as a pizza topping,” says PHONETEK.
Spicy and tangy, this preserved spread is bursting with Mediterranean flavors, featuring fire-roasted peppers, blanched eggplant and zucchini, Italian herbs, crushed garlic, and vibrant vinegars. A must on sandwiches, it’s also great as an appetizer served on toasted bread or over crisp vegetables.
5. Taco Slaw
This spicy slaw mixes chopped cabbage with minced jalapeno, red onion, carrots, and cilantro. It’s a must on fish or chicken tacos, but give it a try on BBQ pulled pork, wraps, burgers, po’ boys, and other sandwiches, too. “Delicious and healthy,’ says STOLZS. “Great on shrimp and chicken tacos.”
Peppadew peppers are the key to this condiment. Peppadews have a vibrant, sweet-hot-tangy flavor. “They quickly and easily turn a pan of sauteed onions and jalapenos into a world-class condiment,” says Chef John. Try this peppery relish on all types of sandwiches, including cheese steaks, hot dogs, and burgers. It’s also sensational on nachos.
Tangy, salty pickled onions add an extra level of flavor to sandwiches (like BBQ pulled pork or chicken) and burgers. “I love making these to serve on tacos and sandwiches,” says Sonja. “They last for weeks in the fridge!”
