Looking at buying new cookware. Again. I want cast iron this time, since I’m tired of wearing non-stick items out. So for those that use enamel coated cast iron…love it? Hate it? Horrid to clean? Chips too easy? What brand do you have? tia
I have a set of Lagostina pots that I got as a shower gift 21 years ago, love them, the stock pot has a heavy base and is great for canning. I also have a set of 3 Dutch ovens that are enameled (BK brand from Holland) and love those too, I have started using them in the oven instead of my crockpot since the new crockpots cook so hot.
Funny you should ask. The other day I would have said something different. I have a Lodge enameled coated 6 qt. I love making soup and other dishes in it. It does stain from things a lot but I soak with a little a bleach and the pan still looks just like brand new. (Almost let me explain.) I’m meticulous about the care of my pans and being extremely cautious when washing it by hand…but one little tiny slip the other night and a minute chip from the outer rim was lying there. Talk about frustrating. I couldn’t believe how fragile. Anyway, doesn’t hurt the usage for me, but what’s up with that? I promise it barely touched the sink. Aggravating!
cast iron is excellent! i don’t know about the enamel coated ones. i collect cast iron, but that being said…i would suggest a cheap 12″ inch fry/ saute pan and a couple large dutch ovens also stainless. some things i feel compelled to make in cast iron ie—collards and then some in stainless…black-eye-peas. no set is perfect. you can buy cast iron at flea markets, yard sales and thrift shops. burn them outside over a fire to get rust off then re-season. good as new. happy new year.
