Allrecipes’ won’t work?

Sorry about that! We know how frustrating this is, but we can help troubleshoot. This problem usually happens when something goes array with internet connectivity, the Adobe flash player needs updating, or certain browser extensions prevent video playback. Watching videos uses more bandwidth than simply visiting a website, which could be the source of any video difficulties. Here are a few things to try to fix the problem:

1) Try updating/installing your Adobe Flash player: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/.
2) Check your internet download speed. Note: Your Wi-Fi or mobile signal indicator does not correlate to download speed. There are a number of websites where you can conduct a free “internet speed test.”
3) Refresh your browser and try again to open a video.
4) Close any other computer applications that may be open,  so they won’t drain memory or processing power.
5) Disconnect other internet-connected devices (e.g. Wi-Fi).
6) Restart your computer and try again to open a video.
7) You could also try installing an alternate browser, such as Google Chrome, to see if the video works there.

If the videos still do not play, contact Customer Support by clicking on “Support” under the Help section, or click here to contact Customer Support

What if I cannot see my cooking school courses?

First, check to make sure you are using one of the recommended browsers mentioned above. Then, try the following:

1. Clear your browser cache, and then check to see whether this cleared up the issue: http://www.wikihow.com/Clear-Your-Browser’s-Cache.
2. Manually update your browser since some older browser versions do not automatically update.
3. Check to see if you have any of the following installed:
– A pop-up blocker or ad blocker
– Some kind of anti-virus plugin on your browser
-If you do have them engaged, try disabling them to to try again to see the course content.
4. Restart your computer.

If you are still having difficulty after trying these solutions, send Customer Support an email so we can troubleshoot for you – We will need to know which browser and version you are using, and we will need a screenshot (including the URL) to help us troubleshoot further. If you need help taking a screenshot for this purpose, this website is helpful: http://www.take-a-screenshot.org/.

Taking a Course

Once you’ve signed up for our courses, you’ll want to be able to take them! Here’s how;

How are the courses scheduled?

Allrecipes Cooking School courses are available for you to take anywhere you have an internet connection, at any time that is convenient for your schedule. Each course is go-at-your-own-pace. There are no due dates for watching the demonstration videos or completing the assignments. You can begin a lesson, stop at any point, and the next time you log in, the system remembers where you left off.

How long does it take to complete a Course?

The courses differ in length and are go-at-your-own-pace, so it varies. Each course consists of between lessons containing a short video demonstration and various accompanying assignments. We suggest 30 to 45 minutes for each lesson within a course, more if you complete the cooking assignment. For example, if you complete one lesson per day in a 6 lesson course, it should take about a week to finish the course.

Do I have to buy any additional material?

The courses are designed to use equipment most people already have in their kitchen, i.e. a knife, cutting board, saucepan, colander, stock pot, etc. There may be some specific equipment not as common that we suggest you purchase, e.g. a jelly roll pan, aka baking sheet, potato masher, loaf pan, etc. We assure you that this is only done when we feel a specific piece of equipment will insure your cooking success.

Most courses include a “cooking exercise,” that requires you purchase all the ingredients needed to prepare a dish. This can cost $10-20 or more, in some cases. The upside however, is that you get to eat your homework!

Homework? Do I have assignments to complete?

Yep! To help make sure you understand your lesson, maximize the learning experience, and to help make it fun, each lesson contains cooking exercises, quizzes, definitions, and discussion questions.

Can I do any of the work Offline?

You may download PDFs of the cooking exercise in each lesson to perform offline. You will also need to have Cookies and JavaScript enabled on your browser in order for the site & printing features to function properly.

Can I download the video demonstration of each lesson?

Unfortunately, the video files cannot be downloaded.

Once I’ve completed a step, can I go back and review the content again?

Yep! You receive unlimited access to all previous work for as long as your account remains active.
