Even though I love them, I haven't bought grapes for years because they've just gotten so darn expensive. But, I may need to re-evaluate. The summer-at-the-state-fair taste of cotton candy balanced with the lightness and juiciness of this particular grape everyone is going nuts for sounds exactly like the no-guilt summer treat I’ve been missing all my life. Okay, tell me more…
NPR reports that this grape hybrid was created by Horticulturalist David Cain and his team at International Fruit Genetics in Bakersfield, CA. Their goal is to do for the grape what Pink Lady, Gala, Braeburn, and other varieties have done for the apple, and serve up more options for grape enthusiasts. What with new apple varieties still being created, grapes have some catching up to do, but Cain and team are also working on grapes that taste like strawberry, pineapple, and mango.

But for now, the Cotton Candy Grape seems to be hitting the spot all on its own. Those who have had a taste get pretty excited about them.
These juicy delights are available from the beginning of August through the end of September, though they have been spotted earlier, so keep an eye out! Just be prepared for the $4-6 per pound price tag—but also, for a wondrous burst of cotton candy flavor every time you pop one in your mouth. Okaaayyy...fair trade-off, if you ask me. (No pun intended.)
