Growing up, advent calendars were all about counting down the days to Christmas by gobbling a daily dose of chocolate hidden behind the little numbered doors. This holiday tradition has taken an adult turn in recent years, as some boozy advent calendars feature whiskey, gin and wine. The brilliant development got its start in Great Britain, spilling over the pond to the U.S., where those cheers-worthy calendars are flying off the shelves as great gifts. Let's drink a toast to these sip-centric creations. Maybe they'll even inspire you to DIY?
1) Mixing it Up
Oregon-based Heritage Distilling Co., offers an adorable calendar full of surprise spirits. Think flavored vodka and the micro-distillery's famous Brown Sugar Bourbon. This combination of 24 mini bottles will keep you busy/tipsy trying different cocktail recipes. Available online and in retail outlets on the West Coast.
2) For Whiskey Fans Only
From the U.K.-based Master of Malts, this calendar is a celebration of the grain-turned-brown-liquor, offering beginners-to-experts the chance to try new spirits and classic favorites.
3) Wine Not?
Drink a different grape varietal every day during December and you'll get a good grasp of what gets wine fans excited about popping a cork, or twisting a screw top. Pamper Hamper, a company out of England, offers up 24 minis, pictured below, while a new U.S. company has just introduced the 12 Nights of Christmas, featuring a dozen different glass pours. Talk about a box set that's sure to be a hit. That would go so well with the Cheese Advent Calendar that's blowing up on the Internet. Sadly, a retail version of that dairy-driven calendar won't be available until 2017, but you could certainly try and DIY it.
