Healthy Snacks: Yogurt Parfaits

They look decadent enough to eat for dessert, but yogurt parfaits are actually a very healthy option for after-school snacks.

When it's not quite hot enough for a frozen treat, yogurt parfaits are a cool and healthy snack.

Use low-fat yogurt and see if you can get away with the plain flavored variety, letting fruit be the source of sweetness (mash up some bananas or berries with a fork and mix with the yogurt).

Start with tall, clear glasses and let kids create their own parfait, layering spoonfuls of yogurt, fruit, granola, and other fun foods. Most ingredients can be store-bought, but try making your own granola!

Protein-Packed Parfait

Say that five times fast!

Yogurt is an excellent source of protein, containing anywhere from 10 to 14 grams per 8-ounce serving. Add in some granola (and the protein that comes with it, as well), and you've got a protein-rich snack, not to mention one with a calcium kick.

Interesting fact: while many still argue yogurt can't compete with meat as a valuable source of protein, the USDA now considers yogurt a meat alternative in school meal programs. For more information about food and nutrition, visit the USDA's website.

Layer it Up

Try some of these items in your yogurt parfait:

  • Bananas
  • Berries
  • Crushed graham crackers
  • Granola
  • Nuts
  • Chocolate chips
