Mark your calendars.
Even if the temps outside don't say "fall" just yet, the aisles of Aldi are going to feel like it soon. That's because many of the new food items coming to the supermarket in September are straight out of the annual German Oktoberfest celebration. Aldi didn't skip the bratwurst, strudel, or red cabbage. (Of course, the German grocery chain has a bit of an edge on knowing just what to serve up at these festivals.)
Plus, Aldi is ramping up their fall-flavored treats as the temperatures begin to cool. Expect to see all sorts of apple, pumpkin, maple, and spiced snacks and sweets. That even extends to the drink aisle, where hard ciders and flavored coffees will begin popping up as soon as the week of September 4.
1. Specially Selected Sundried Tomato and Garlic Fagottini Pasta
Available 9/4, $1.99
Give one final adieu to summer with a new flavorful pasta option. You can hold on to these until next week, when new pasta sauces come out (see item #2), or you can use them with a top-rated Fresh Tomato Pasta Sauce and some fresh veggie finds from a trip to the farmers’ market. Not a fan of sundried tomato? Aldi has two other new pasta options this month: Specially Selected Grilled Red Pepper Fagottini Pasta and Specially Selected Truffle Fagottini Pasta.
2. Reggano Tomato, Basil and Garlic Pasta and Sauce
Available 9/11, $1.49
Did you snag a package of the new Fagottini Pasta last week? If you haven't already cooked it up, use it with one of Aldi's all-new pasta sauces, such as Reggano Tomato, Basil and Garlic Pasta and Sauce; Reggano Roasted Garlic Pasta and Pesto Sauce; or Reggano White Cheddar Broccoli Whole Wheat Pasta and Sauce. All three are new to the supermarket this week. Keep a packet or two of these on hand for weeknight meals, and try one of these 10 delicious ideas for cooking with a jar of pasta sauce.
3. Wicked Grove Pear Hard Cider
Available 9/11, $6.99
It might not be fall just yet, but the evenings are beginning to feel cooler. Plus, you can always use a cold one to chill out after work, while gardening, or during a football game. Aldi is introducing their Wicked Grove Pear Hard Cider for the season this week. A six-pack is a steal at $6.99, and what better way to kick off an autumn feel than with a fruity, refreshing cider? If pear is too sweet, stay tuned.
4. Deutsche Küche Artichoke & Cheese and Spinach & Ricotta Strudels
Available 9/18, $3.99
"Strudel" is German for "whirlpool," and these pastries live up to that name, with a blended layer of vegetables and cheese sandwiched amid crispy layers of flaky dough that's very similar to phyllo. These strudels would be ideal for a weekend brunch; we'd even like them for dinner with a crisp side salad or fresh veggies.
5. Deutsche Küche Nuremberg Bratwurst
Available 9/18, $2.69
Is a state-side Oktoberfest celebration complete without Bratwurst? Absolutely not. But you can also use these packs of smoked sausage as an easy addition to weeknight dinners. Grill a few with some corn and potatoes, or use them in classic German recipes to celebrate Oktoberfest, which officially kicks off September 21 in Munich. In addition to the classic flavor, Aldi is also releasing three other flavors: Deutsche Küche Nuremberg Bratwurst Reduced Fat, Deutsche Küche Oktoberfest Bratwurst with Cheese, Deutsche Küche Oktoberfest Bratwurst with Herbs.
6. Deutsche Küche Apple Walnut Cake
Available 9/18, $6.99
Need something sweet to go with all your traditional German foods this month? The week of September 18, be on the lookout for this cake, an almond loaf made with juicy apple slices and caramelized walnut pieces. You'll find this in the frozen section, so go ahead and get a few for future fall celebrations before they're gone for the season. Also out this week, a Deutsche Küche Bienenstich Almond Cake.
7. Millville Peanut Butter & Jelly Puffs
Available 9/18, $2.19
With school in full swing, you've got to keep on top of your breakfast game so kids have plenty of new finds to delight them. This week, look for new peanut butter and jelly puffs. These sweetened corn and oat puffs taste like that lunchtime classic, but they skip the artificial colorings and high fructose corn syrup of some other kid-friendly cereal. Another option for enjoying these puffs? Pour a few in a zip-top bag, and use them as an after-school snack.
8. Wicked Grove Cinnamon Hard Cider
Available 9/25, $6.99
This Cinnamon Hard Cider is Aldi's second hard cider for the month, and it's the grown-up answer to all those vats of piping hot apple cider at fall festivals and carnivals. Keep a six pack (which is just $6.99) in the fridge for a crisp cool off or a go-to option when you're headed to a friend’s house for some weekend tailgating.
9. L'oven Fresh Everything Bread
Available 9/25, $3.99
If you’re a fan of sprinkling Everything Bagel Seasoning on your bagels, toast, even oatmeal, you're going to be delighted to learn that Aldi is releasing a new Everything Bread this month. The whole loaf is coated with seeds and spices to resemble that garlic-rich spice mixture with its own cult following. If you're in a hurry, add a schmear of cream cheese or mashed avocado, and take your breakfast to go. Keep a loaf in the freeze for weekend Egg in the Hole.
10. Crofton Cast Iron 4.6 Quart French Oven
Available 9/25, $24.99
If all these delicious foods weren't enough to excite you for September at Aldi, the release of this medium-sized French oven might do the trick. As the season for soups and stews near, you can stock your cabinet with a great go-to enamel-coated cast iron French oven that you can turn to time and time again when the comfort foods call. This smaller size is especially ideal for people cooking for one or two, or when you only need a small batch for a seasonal gathering. Plus, when not in use on the stove, these great French ovens make beautiful decoration pieces on stovetops, cabinets, or open shelving.
