10 St. Patrick’s Day Cocktails Paired With Irish Toasts & Sage Sayings

Yes, we spiked these St. Paddy’s-inspired cocktails with an extra shot of Irish wisdom. But go easy on ’em. You don’t want to make a holy show of yourself. Remember, it’s often a man’s mouth that breaks his nose.

Right. Enough foostering about, let’s get to the booze and the worldly wisdom.

1) A Pint of the Black Stuff

Dark, rich and slow from the tap, stout beer with its telltale foamy top is an Irish classic. Fancy a jar?

Add a shot of Irish Wisdom: May you live to be a hundred years with one extra year to repent.

Can’t decide between a pint of Guinness and a shot of Irish whiskey? There’s always…

2) An Irish Boilermaker

You know the drill. Fill a pint glass about 2/3 full with stout; fill a shot glass with either your favorite Irish whiskey or Irish cream liqueur, or a combination of the two. Drop the shot glass into the pint glass. Thrill to the bubbly frothing effect it creates, and drink it in one gulp. Just be careful you don’t go fully fluthered on us.

Add a shot of Irish Wisdom: You’ll never plow a field by turning it over in your mind.

3) Green Punch

“This is a green colored punch that tastes wonderful. Great for Saint Patrick’s Day or whenever you feel like drinking something green!” — Alena

Add a shot of Irish Wisdom: It is better to spend money like there’s no tomorrow than to spend tonight like there’s no money.

Go green with the garnishes: Consider mint leaves, lime slices and twists of lime zest, slices of kiwi, green olives, slices of cucumber, celery stalks, or even ice cubes made from green punch.

4) Green Grog

A fizzy rum punch with floating Emerald islands of lime sherbet.

Add a shot of Irish Wisdom: Forgetting a debt doesn’t mean it’s paid.

5) Shots of Green

No point denying it, drinking green stuff is fun. But if you’re not feeling punchy for St. Paddy’s, keep things simple. Just tilt back a shot of Crème de menthe liqueur, melon liqueur, or Green Chartreuse liqueur. Perfect for raising a toast to the Emerald Isle. Sláinte!

Add a shot of Irish Wisdom: Honey is sweet, but don’t lick it off a briar.

6) Original Irish Cream

Make your own version of Bailey’s. It’s Irish whiskey mixed with cream, chocolate syrup, coffee granules, chocolate, and vanilla and almond extracts.

Add a shot of Irish Wisdom: If you buy what you don’t need, you might have to sell what you do.

7) Chocolate Mint Shot

Three kinds of liqueur add up to a shot that tastes like a chocolate mint cookie.

Add a shot of Irish Wisdom: Here’s to a long life and a merry one. A quick death and an easy one. A pretty girl and an honest one. A cold pint and another one!

8) Irish Black Russian

It’s Moscow meets Dublin. Vodka and coffee liqueur combine with Guinness and cola.

Add a shot of Irish Wisdom: A good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures.

9) St. Michael’s Irish Americano

One for the Irish-Americans.

Add a shot of Irish Wisdom: Where the tongue slips, it speaks the truth.

For the teetotalers and the wee ones, here’s a refreshing minty green treat.

Add a shot of non-alcoholic Irish Wisdom: There is no luck except where there is discipline.
