Read This Before You Eat Raw Ahi Tuna

The FDA has reported that Hilo Fish Company Inc. initiated a voluntary recall of tuna (sourced from Sustainable Seafood Company, Vietnam, and Santa Cruz Seafood Inc., Philippines), that tested positive for the Hepatitis A virus.

The affected products are eight-ounce tuna steaks with an expiration date of October 1, 2018, and 15-pound frozen tuna cubes set to expire on April 1, 2019, and were sent to grocery stores in California, Oklahoma, and Texas. (Some was also shipped to New York, but their State Department of Health has confirmed that the items were not sold to the public). The FDA has provided the list of establishments below that may have contaminated tuna, and they recommend contacting your doctor if you believe you may have been exposed:

So far, there have been no confirmed illnesses associated with the affected fish, but if you have not been vaccinated for Hepatitis A and have eaten imported yellowfin tuna in the past two weeks, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) recommends getting a post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) shot.

Symptoms of Hepatitis A include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, and more—and may not appear until two to six weeks after exposure. Hepatitis A is contagious, and while most recover completely, people can feel sick for several months.
